 Overview  Detail | Title: A House in Harlan Dimensions: 31" x 32 ½" Date of completion: 2010 Inspiration: The inspiration for this quilt came from a deep love for old family photos, and my desire to explore and uncover the hidden or lost stories they hold. This series of pictures from the 1930's-1960's are from my paternal grandma's family, and they tell the story of growing up, the loss of both parents and grandparents raising the family. Description: Machine pieced and appliqued, rust dyed 100% cotton, commercial batik and recycled fabrics, inkjet printed photos, colored pencils, free-motion machine quilting. |
 Overview  Detail | Title: Bricollage 9 Dimensions: 14” x 27” Date of completion: 2009 Inspiration: The inspiration for this work came from the materials at hand. What could I do with circles and triangles? I arranged them in a manner that made sense to me. I embellished them as the mood struck me. As with all my art, I worked until it told me it was finished. Description: Machine pieced, rust dyed cotton, over dyed rust dyed cotton, screen printed with textile paint, machine stitched with mono-filament, embellished with hand embroidery, rusty wire and washers. |
 Overview  Detail | Title: Bryce Canyon Dimensions: 36 ½” x 33 ½” Date of completion: 2010 Inspiration: I am moved by the majesty and elegance of the powers of nature. When visiting Bryce Canyon in Utah, I snapped photos of the brilliant colors and varied formations. This piece is based on my original photo and drawing. Description: Machine pieced using freezer paper templates and monofilament thread; includes rust dyed fabrics by artist and Rust-Tex, blue hand dyed fabrics by the artist, commercial fabrics; sky hand painted by the artist; trees fused, free motion quilted with rayon variegated threads. |
 Overview  Detail | Title: Chinese Coins Dimensions: 22 ½" x 22" Date of completion: 2006 Inspiration: Having just finished a Trip Around the World quilt made to match a copper-patina headboard. I created the "Chinese Coins" pattern because the colors reminded me of coins; copper and bronze, along with rock colors obsidian and granite with metallic highlights of gold and silver were used in the quilt. Description: Machine pieced, rust dyed cotton fabric, commercially produced batiks, free-motion machine quilted with polyester monofilament thread, embellished with crinoids and other fossils, seed beads, rock chips, shell buttons, Chinese coins, (real and reproduction), and various beads that echo the flat round coin shape. |
 Overview  Detail | Title: Earth & Sky Dimensions: 36" x 36" Date of completion: 2009 Inspiration: The hand rusted cotton was made over several weeks by the artist and in many cases a piece was put through the rusting process numerous times. This piece is part of a series of works related to the physical properties of our planet and it's relationship to the universe, as we now know it. Description: Machine pieced, rust dyed 100% cotton, hand dyed fabric by the artist, machine quilted. |
 Overview  Detail | Title: Going Dimensions: 17 ¾ " x 17 ½" Date of completion: 2009 Inspiration: This quilt was inspired by the imperfection in the transfer of a broken rusty bowl. The image appeared to be both a 'sun' and an 'eye', as though both providing light and taking it in. Description: Whole cloth quilt, rust dyed cotton fabric, hand quilted using commercial and rust dyed cotton threads, embellished with seed beads. |
 Overview  Detail | Title: Homestead Dimensions: 8 ½” x 11” Date of completion: 2009 Inspiration: This quilt evolved from the premise of "What does the fabric tell me?" I dyed the fabric by randomly wrapping the cloth around one or more objects. When the dying was completed, I held the fabric up to see what patterns or shapes emerged. I discovered the fabric showed, “Blue Ridge Mountain’s Homestead”. Description: Rust dyed whole cloth quilt, machine applique house, free-motion machine quilting, binding hand sewn blanket stitch using cotton embroidery thread. |
 Overview  Detail | Title: Jack in the Pulpit Dimensions: 22" x 20" Date of completion: 2010 Inspiration: Every day I walk in the woods with my dog. In the late spring it is an adventure while walking to search for Jack in the Pulpits. I love the primordial look of their leaves and the way they hide in the undergrowth. I often bring my sketchbook and sketch them. Description: Background fabric over dyed Rust-Tex fabric with procion dyes, artist hand dyed cotton, silks and thread, raw edged fused, free-motion machine quilted. |
 Overview  Detail | Title: Jars Of Clay, My People Dimensions: 29 ½" x 21" Date of completion: 2009 Inspiration: My inspiration came from a Bible scripture that says we are but jars of clay, our essence; our being is the Spirit within. "My People" represents friends, families, communities, mankind. Description: Fused, raw edge applique using original inkjet images printed on commercial, rust dyed cottons and metallic paper applied to commercial fabrics, embellished with oil paint sticks and water soluble wax crayons, free-motion and machine guided quilting using rayon and polyester threads. |
 Overview  Detail | Title: Left Out in The Snow Dimensions: 13 ½" x 7 ¾” Date of completion: 2009 Inspiration: When I saw this old rusty fire truck on the side of the road in a drift of snow, I stopped to take pictures of it. When I had printed the outline of the picture on fabric I thought; "What if I added real rust to the picture?" This became my first rust dyed art quilt and my "Selective Rusting Technique" was born. Description: Whole cloth, ink jet printed photo, on rust dyed cotton, “Selective Rusting”, dry-brush rust paint, textile paint, free-motion machine quilted with polyester, rayon thread, and metallic thread. |
 Overview  Detail | Title: Luna Dimensions: 16 ¼" x 30 ½" Date of completion: 2010 Inspiration: Reading about The Rust-Tex Collection brought to mind the phrase "moth and rust" I recalled from a Bible verse. Year’s ago, I saw a Luna moth which I thought was exceptionally beautiful, so I used it to illustrate this verse. The small brown moths were chosen because they have the same colors as the rust-dyed fabric. Description: Machine pieced cotton sheeting rust-dyed by the artist, commercial cotton fabric; raw edge machine appliqued cotton fabric hand-dyed by the artist, painted unbleached muslin, fabric markers, acrylic paint mixed with fabric medium, free-motion machine quilting and hand-quilted with cotton, poly-cotton and nylon threads. |
 Overview  Detail | Title: Moonstruck Dimensions: 31" x 31 ½" Date of completion: 2009 Inspiration: A few years ago I bought the Rust Tex Instructional CD and went crazy rusting fabric. I had a hard time incorporating the rust dyed fabric into my art quilts. When I started doing a series of quilts with overlapping circles, it struck me that the rust dyed fabric would be perfect for one of these quilts. Description: Machine pieced using the artist's rust dyed cotton; background fabric is over dyed rust dyed cotton with procion dyes, free-motion machine quilted with polyester, rayon, cotton and metallic threads. |
 Overview  Detail | Title: Mum's the Word Dimensions: 41" x 41" Date of completion: 2006 Inspiration: Fall for me is the loveliest time of year, with mums making the last show of color before winding into the bleakness of winter. Large flower heads in rusts, yellow, white, and rose make a lovely mix. I wanted to bring that show indoors! Description: Machine pieced, rust dyed cotton, overlaid with Chrysanthemum bloom transfers, Inko dye transfers, machine embroidery, hand dyed fabric, stenciled lettering, patinated copper leaf and two leaf transfers, free-motion machine quilting, hand quilted echo stitching. |
 Overview  Detail | Title: Panning for Gold Dimensions: 27" X 27" Date of completion: 2010 Inspiration: The rust dyed fabric was the inspiration for this quilt. It reminded me of rock strata in a canyon. Other fabrics were combined to build this canyon with a river at the bottom. Slightly hidden flecks of gold foil completed the concept of panning for gold. Description: Fused and machine appliqued using rust-dyed cotton and silk: other fabrics include silk organza, silk noil, shibori-dyed cotton, nylon chiffon and tulle, all fabrics were dyed by the artist, machine quilted with nylon thread, embellished with cotton cording and gold foil, heat treated to distort the tulle and chiffon. |
 Overview  Detail | Title: Rust Roest Dimensions: 46” x 33” Date of completion: 2009 Inspiration: My inspiration came from the fabric I rust dyed. Description: Machine raw edge applique, rusted cotton fabric, commercial fabrics, free-motion machine quilting. |
 Overview  Detail | Title: Rusted Geometry Dimensions: 36" x 41" Date of completion: 2010 Inspiration: In Pittsburgh, PA, where I live, we have a store called "Construction Junction", which collects and resells recycled materials. When I need inspiration I browse through the store...this time a bucket of rusty nails caught my eye and intrigued me. My husband is a retired Geometry teacher so hence the title "Rusted Geometry". Description: Whole-cloth quilt, cotton canvas, backed with felt, hand-quilted, rusted with old nails and then embellished with those same nails. |
 Overview  Detail | Title: Rustscape Dimensions: 24 ½" x 23" Date of completion: 2010 Inspiration: My husband is a metal sculptor. I borrowed some of his pieces, rusted them over the summer in my rust garden. I then enjoyed deciding what to make with them in the fall. Many of the sections reminded me of space type landscapes. Description: Machine pieced, fused applique, rust dyed fabric 100% cotton, commercial and hand-dyed cottons, free-motion machine and hand quilted with cotton, polyester, rayon and metallic threads, embellished with seed beads. |
 Overview  Detail | Title: She #3 Dimensions: 16" x 23" Date of completion: 2009 Inspiration: This was the third quilt in my She Series, attempting to show the strength of a woman. I am still working on this series with #6 the biggest one yet to be finished. I loved creating on the fly, with no pre-conceived result in mind. Description: Machine pieced, rust dyed cottons, commercial fabrics, discharge dyed, free-motion machine quilted with cotton and rayon threads. |
 Overview  Detail | Title: Solar Crust Dimensions: 34" x 40" Date of completion: 2010 Inspiration: This quilt was inspired by three rusty circular saw blades and a lawn rake. When combined, the cloths created a solar image. Description: Machine pieced, rust and tannin dyed cotton/linen bend, discharged cotton and discharged linen; free-motion and straight-line machine quilted with cotton threads. |
 Overview  Detail | Title: Spring Rites of the Turtle Dimensions: 22" x 22" Date of completion: 2010 Inspiration: I began with thread painting the design on a beautiful rust-dyed damask napkin acquired from Rust-Tex. The turtle is my totem. I'm exploring the religion and culture of this lovely species. As I make turtle shrines; I am developing techniques and decorative devices to express my reverence. Description: Thread painted with cotton threads, rust-dyed cotton damask napkin, fused commercial and rust-dyed cotton fabric, organdy and chiffon hand wrapped flowers, hand-dyed vintage laces, free-motion machine quilted with metallic threads, embellished with hand twisted cords and beads. |
 Overview  Detail | Title: Strata Dimensions: 20" x 27" Date of completion: 2009 Inspiration: This work was inspired by how layers of earth form and tell a story in each layer. The rust formed layers of heavy staining that reminded me of the way iron and other elements sometimes form a design in the side of a hill when excavated. Description: Whole cloth quilt of white cotton stained with rust, polyester fabric, fabric pens, pencil, heat distressed, free-motion machine and hand quilted. |
 Overview  Detail | Title: Tiffany Turquoise Mine Dimensions: 15 ½" x 21 ½" Date of completion: 2009 Inspiration: The rusted forms on the fabric became my inspiration. It appeared to me that the forms suggested the cavities of a mine and the slight influences of the turquoise hand dyed areas made my choice quite clear. Description: Cotton fabric, hand dyed, rust dyed, discharged with rust remover, hand quilted with cotton and silk thread, embellished with beads, rusted items, wood. |
 Overview  Detail | Title: Uncharted Landscapes Dimensions: 23 ½" x 23" Date of completion: 2009 Inspiration: Seeing Lois Jarvis' beautiful work, at the monthly meetings of Professional Art Quilters Alliance (PAQA), inspired me to try some of the techniques on a variety of silk fabrics in order to create a piece to enter in The Rust-Tex Collection. Description: Machine pieced, rust dyed silk and cellulose in a variety of weaves, rust dyed ribbon, commercial black silk taffeta, techniques on the squares include fused applique, hand and machine embroidery, quilting with a variety of threads, hand painting with inks, silk screen printing with textile paint, embellished with beads and French knots. |
 Overview  Detail | Title: Whisper on the Wind Dimensions: 12" x 12" Date of completion: 2010 Inspiration: My maternal grandmother loved the woods. When I was a child, we would often set off on adventures to find the spring wildflowers. I was fascinated by the wind in the trees and imagined the sound to be fairies calling to me. Description: Rust-dyed cotton base with printed digital images, organdy, fabric paint, machine quilted, hand beaded. |
 Overview  Detail | Title: Woodland Walk Dimensions: 21 ½" x 25" Date of completion: 2007 Inspiration: The rusted fabric itself inspired the autumnal theme of drying leaves, decay, naked trees, fallen feathers death...before life renews itself. Description: Machine pieced, 100% cotton rust-dyed fabric, marbled paper, commercial fabrics, rubber stamped with acrylic paint, colored with colored pencils, free-motion machine quilted with rayon threads, embellished with buttons, feathers, and metallic fibers. |
