Frequently Asked Questions

I am wondering if you are accepting framed pieces for this exhibit?

I am not accepting framed pieces into the Rust-Tex Collection because the frames would make the collection too bulky when I pack it in a suitcase to take to England. This includes quilts with wire armatures or stiffened with boards.

I understand what an appraisal of an item is, but have never been required to send an appraisal with an entry. Is that for the insurance value?

An appraisals is no longer required; however, they would be extremely helpful in the event of a claim. Any documentation that can help prove the value of the piece would be considered in the event of a claim (i.e. bill of sale, appraisal of similar piece.) The best example that I would offer is that if a person lost an wedding ring without any documentation, it would be challenging to determine it's value.

I have a top made from fabric dyed by Lois Jarvis, Daren Redman and Ginny Keiser's. Do I need to enter the group category?

You do not have to enter it into a group category, as there is not one. Please give credit to the person who did the rust dyeing in the description of your piece.

Is there a catagory for rust dyed wearables?

I am sorry there is not. Be creative in your thinking of an entry. Whatever you enter it must hang from a sleeve like a quilt. Some art quilts are made in the shape of a kimono. Maybe you can sew your vest or some small doll size dresses onto a quilt.

Does every piece used have to be rusted or can I mix rusted pieces with non-rusted? Is there a percentage of rusted fabric that should be used? Should the predominant fabric be rusted?

You should feel free to use what ever amount of rust dyed fabric is necessary to express your idea. Every piece does not have to be rust dyed. There is no percentage of rust dyed fabric that must be used. The predominant fabric doesn't have to be rust dyed. The only requirement is that it has to have some rust dyed fabric in it.

Can I over dye rust dyed fabric? Can I rust dye hand dyed fabric?

Rust dyeing on pre-dyed fabric is acceptable. If it is a hand dyed piece you should give credit to the person who dyed it in the description of your piece. Example: Hand dye fabric by Laura Wasilowski with rust over dye by Janet Hartje. If you are rust dyeing on a commercial batik or a white on white print, it is not necessary to mention the manufacturer.
