Lake Living

11 ¾" x 11 ¾"

Photos I purchased at a flea market were the inspiration for this framed wall piece.

In it I tried to capture the universal truths about vacations on the lake, from the list of things one experiences (sand, water, and fish) to the things one hopes to experience (boats, books, and quiet) to the memories one comes away with (the smell of pine needles and a sense of peace).

I love the ordinariness of these old vacation photos! Someone recently showed me her vacation pictures and there was a pine tree shot against the background of a lake, making it slightly overexposed. Her picture was on a digital camera in full color but was still the same naive “I want to capture this moment of beauty” photo.

The photo corners are made from fabric and sewn so the photos can be removed. Long running stitches hold this fabric collage to a wool blanket “mat” and linen backing. The linen was then stretched over foam core and framed.

After I hand stamped some foliage on the cloth using a commercially produced stamp and metallic pigment stamp pads, I sewed through one of the photos to hold it in place using one of the pattern stitches on my sewing machine that echoed the shape of the stamped leaves. Seed beads became the berries on the bushes.

Words and repetition of the group of people in the water were put on with a light weight t-shirt transfer paper, cut out very close to the image. Shells and fossils were glued on.
